  3. Dear Valued Macintosh User,

  5. Thank you for downloading this beta version of the InterVU MPEG Player.  
  6. InterVU welcomes and encourages your feedback (e-mail:
  7. macprevu@intervu.com).  Please read the following text carefully to
  8. understand the configuration, installation, and operational requirements of
  9. the Mac player.  Additional information is also provided by a help file,
  10. Help.html, located inside the InterVU folder installed by this installation 
  11. application.

  13. There are some problems with both the  player and its supporting environment
  14. which are noted in the PRESENT LIMITATIONS section below.
  15.  
  16. IMPORTANT for Power PC owners: PreVU uses relatively new features of the
  17. Apple OS in order to offer reliable and enjoyable video playback.  As a
  18. result, the recent 7.5.3 release of the Apple OS is required on Power PC
  19. computers.  Please upgrade your OS to 7.5.3  before installing the PreVU
  20. plug-in.  This upgrade can be obtained from the Apple WEB or FTP sites.

  22. We intend to rapidly address the problems listed below in the next release
  23. of the player.  Until then, we hope this version of PreVU offers you an
  24. interesting and enjoyable way to "browse" MPEG video files stored across the
  25. Internet.  We welcome your suggestions for improvements and new features.

  28. SOME INFORMATION ABOUT INTERVU AND THE MPEG PLAYER
  29. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  30. The InterVU Macintosh MPEG Player is one of several products offered by
  31. InterVU. These products are designed to make digital video accessible,
  32. standards based, and efficient to the WEB page developer and information
  33. provider. Efficient bandwidth management for distribution of video data over
  34. the Internet is the objective.  
  35.  
  36. The features and modes of operation of the InterVU MPEG player are intended
  37. to reduce the bandwidth requirements of network video playback: first frame
  38. preview, streaming playback, MPEG support, and local cached playback.
  39. Furthermore, the InterVU WEB site demonstrates that small but specific
  40. videos have significant utility and value when integrated into the WEB page
  41. multimedia environment. It is InterVU's desire to have this capability
  42. enhance the value of your message, not distract from it. 
  43.  
  44. The InterVU MPEG player is a unique type of Macintosh application.  On 68K
  45. processor systems, it is what is referred as a "code resource".  On the
  46. Power PC platforms, the player is a "shared library".  In either case, the
  47. player is not a stand alone program. Rather , it is an extension to the
  48. Netscape Navigator (or potentially any other browser supporting the
  49. "plug-in" programming interface).  
  50.  
  51. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  52. -------------------------------------------
  53. PreVU works with Netscape Navigator 2.0 or newer (Atlas is preferred).  
  54. Successful operation of PreVU requires that you install the PreVU "puzzle piece"
  55. program extension in the Plug-ins folder of the browser (i.e., any browser 
  56. supporting the "plug-in").  
  57.  
  58. - After you finish reading this document, click  the Continue button, and 
  59.   follow the displayed installation instructions.
  60.  
  61. Note: If you have multiple copies of a particular browser (e.g., Netscape
  62. Navigator), and would like to be able run PreVU on all of them, you must
  63. repeat the installation procedure for each of the browsers.  After the first installation
  64. is complete, a dialog will appear, which will give you two options, namely, 
  65. "Quit" and "Continue".  If you  wish to install PreVU for use with any another 
  66. version of Netscape choose  "Continue", otherwise, choose "Quit".

  68. Some application software packages (e.g., Adobe Photoshop)  also have 
  69. Plug-ins folders. Be careful not to install  PreVU in the Plug-ins folders 
  70. associated with these other packages. 
  71.  
  72. - Verify that the PreVU plug-in puzzle piece is installed in the "plug-in" 
  73.   folder of the browser.

  75. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLAYING A (LOCAL) DEMO VIDEO
  76. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  77. 1. Start Netscape Navigator by double-clicking on the icon of Netscape
  78.     Navigator.  Note, for this test you do not have to be connected to the
  79.     Internet.
  80.  
  81. 2. From the File menu, select "Open File".
  82.  
  83. 3. From the dialog window, find your Netscape Navigator Folder and open it.
  84.  
  85. 4. Open the "Plug-ins" folder within the Netscape Navigator Folder.
  86.  
  87. 5. Open the InterVU  Folder.  Select the file "Help.html" and open it.  This 
  88.     help file offers, among other useful information, a "Demo" or test video.
  89.  
  90. 6. To play the video that showed up on this screen, click on the play  button
  91.    (i.e., the green triangle), or click anywhere on the video region.
  92.  
  93. PRESENT LIMITATIONS
  94. ---------------------------------
  95. Frame Use (Netscape Navigator problem only--Atlas works fine) ...
  96.  
  97. If PreVU is used on a page with Netscape frames, PreVU will begin looping.  
  98. InterVU has incorporated a new option that tells PreVU it is working within frames:
  99.  
  100. FRAMES = YES
  101.  
  102. The WEB page developer should use this option with the EMBED statement 
  103. on the WEB page.  As Netscape improves its streaming interface, this problem
  104. will be resolved.  See note below.
  105.  
  106. The Broken Puzzle Piece Icon  (Netscape Navigator problem only--Atlas 
  107.                                                   works fine) ...
  108.  
  109. You will see some screen/window flashing during first frame preview.  PreVU
  110. uses the "Image" reload control of Netscape to accomplish the "first frame
  111. preview" feature of PreVU. This is because any partially downloaded video
  112. file results in a broken icon representation by Netscape at the video's
  113. location on the screen.  The "Image" reload option of the browser enables
  114. the PreVU player to repaint the video image over the top of the broken icon
  115. image.  Future versions of Netscape will permit us to eliminate this problem
  116. (see note below).
  117.  
  118. Stopping the video while in a full screen-playing mode (i.e., when the video
  119. is the only item on the screen), will result in a broken icon. Clicking the
  120. "Image load" button will not restart or refresh the image on the screen.
  121. Nevertheless, the reload button will replay the video.  Future versions of
  122. Netscape will allow us to eliminate this problem (see note below).
  123.  
  124. Broken icons will also occur as a result of stopping the video when using
  125. Netscape frames (that is, if the WEB page developer used the "FRAMES=YES"
  126. option in the EMBED command). Use "Image load" to start playing again.  Again, this
  127. problem is very similar to the above two.  And as before, future versions of
  128. Netscape will allow us to eliminate this problem (see note below).
  129.  
  130. Reloading the same video or different videos many times will cause Netscape
  131. to run out of memory, thus preventing any  further reloading of the video
  132. (another broken icon problem).  Quitting Netscape and the restarting it will
  133. resolve (or reset) this memory problem.
  134.  
  135. NOTE:  The current version of Atlas (new Netscape browser) does fix the broken
  136. icon problem.  InterVU detects Atlas and is subsequently able to take advantage of 
  137. its architectural improvements. However, viewing  several videos 
  138. would cause Atlas to run out of memory, thereby resulting  in  instabilty of the player.

  140. Other Limitations ... 
  141.  
  142. Large video files (multiple megabytes) can cause player stability problems.  
  143.  
  144. The Microsoft Explorer is not yet supported.
  145.  
  146. Multiple files, with .mpg extension, will show up in the Netscape 2.0 folder
  147. after an unexpected shutdown.  You may drag them to the trash.
  148.  
  149.  
  150. ENHANCING PERFORMANCE
  151. ----------------------------------------
  152. You can improve the performance of PreVU (and also reduce multiple video
  153. memory reload problems) by increasing the size of the disk cache and memory
  154. size allocated for Netscape Navigator.  This is accomplished as follows:
  155.  
  156. Increasing disk cache:
  157.  
  158. Set the disk cache to 512K or more. To do this,  pull down the Apple menu
  159. and select Memory from the Control Panels sub-menu. Then use arrows in the
  160. control associated with the Disk Cache to set the value to 512K (or more).
  161.  
  162. Increasing memory for Netscape Navigator 2.01:
  163.  
  164. The default size of memory allocated  for Netscape Navigator 2.01 is 3016K.
  165. PreVU performs better if you set the preferred size of the memory to 6016K.
  166. You can do this by selecting the Netscape Navigator icon, and the choosing
  167. "Get info" from the file menu.  Edit the content of Preferred Size to
  168. reflect 6016K.
